Greenspring Honors Student Scholars

Local students who worked at Greenspring are candidates for $6,000 in scholarships toward higher education.

Since 1999, Greenspring Retirement Community has awarded scholarships to local high school students who have worked in various dining services capacities at the retirement community. In addition to receiving a wage, students may be eligible for scholarships paid directly to the college or professional school of each student’s choice.

Chris Perkins spoke to an enthusiastic group of seniors at Greenspring in Springfield about his plans for Virginia’s 11th District, there were quite a few retired soldiers in the audience gathered to hear him. Perkins made it clear that he had a serious difference of opinion with his – now former - opponent, Ken Vaughn, on military funding.

Skateboarding for a Cause

SkateFest 2012 to raise money for Children's National Medical Center.

Skaters from all over Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and beyond will travel to Wakefield Skate Park in Annandale, on June 22 and 23 to participate in the 6th annual SkateFest. The festival celebrates National Go Skateboarding Day and raises money for Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

5k/15k races are among the most popular events at Springfield Days.

This year marked the third annual race at Springfield Days and had by far the largest turnout the event has ever seen. "Several years back we decided that we needed a signature race for the people of Springfield to call their own, and it just keeps getting better and better every year," said Mark Russell of Springfield, the race coordinator.

Fairfax County hosts fourth annual naturalization ceremony.

"My fellow Americans," U.S. Rep Gerry Connolly (D-11) said with gravitas, pausing to let the meaning sink in. And when it did, 75 immigrants - from Afghanistan to Uzbekistan - who had just raised their right hand and taken the Oath of Allegiance to become American citizens, erupted with applause and tears, waving American flags and hugging family members. Fairfax County police have released the name of the man who died after officers shot him on Saturday, May 19. Gray Alan Combs, Jr., 22, "of no fixed address" died after he was taken to a hospital, police said.
