Concerts from Kirkwood to Kick off New Season

Concerts from Kirkwood, the series of free concerts presented by Kirkwood Presbyterian Church, begins its 2014 – 2015 season on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 3 p.m. as organ virtuoso Aram Basmadjian takes the console to celebrate the ten-year anniversary of the installation of Kirkwood’s Allen organ.

Seniors Exhibit Original Artwork at Greenspring

On Thursday, Aug. 21, Greenspring retirement community celebrated American Artist Appreciation Month by hosting an art show for the many resident artists and artisans at the community to showcase their work. More than 35 residents exhibited at the show, which ranged in style from watercolors and oil painting to pottery and photography.

Springfield Days Kicks off Summer of Fun

Festival is May 31-June 1.

There’s no better way to kick off the summer than with Springfield Days, coming this year May 31-June 1. The community event, always the weekend after Memorial Day, starts with the Springfield 5K on May 31 at 8 a.m. The route takes runners along the upcoming Springfield Town Center and features live bands along the course.

Patriots’ Cup 5K Race/1 Mile Walk to Help Virginians with Disabilities

More than 250 runners, representing 27 corporate and community teams will be running in the 36th Annual Patriots’ Cup Corporate Challenge 5K, one of The Arc of Northern Virginia’s largest fundraisers.

Animal Shelter Grand Opening

The Fairfax County Animal Shelter will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house this Saturday, May 17, to celebrate the official completion of the shelter’s renovation and expansion. Festivities begin at 1 p.m. and will include behind-the-scenes tours, face-painting and hands-on interaction with rabbits, guinea pigs and small reptiles. The shelter’s at 4500 West Ox Road and is open Tuesday through Friday, noon to 7 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Arctic Snowy Owl at Springfield Mall

"Snowy Owl at Springfield Mall," the subject line read on the Virginia Society of Ornithology’s birding hotline, on Feb. 4. The winter of 2013-2014 had seen an unprecedented irruption of Arctic Snowy Owls into the mid-Atlantic states. Dozens, or hundreds were being seen from Maine to the Carolinas, and even one in Florida. Mostly they showed up on Atlantic barrier islands, or at airports (two were seen at Washington National Airport) which look like their native tundra.

The Washington Irving Theatre Society will present “The Secret Garden: The Musical” on Friday, Feb. 28, and Saturday, March 1. Both performances start at 7 p.m. at Washington Irving Middle School, located at 8100 Old Keene Mill Rd in Springfield.
