Fire in Lorton Results in Several Injuries

On Tuesday, Oct. 14, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue arrived at the scene of a two-alarm outside fire in the 9900 block of Richmond Highway in Lorton. Units arrived to find a large recycling pile on fire and a person trapped in a crane. Firefighters rescued the crane occupant and began suppression operations. Crews worked to bring the fire under control, FCFRD said. Units remained on the scene for an extended amount of time and Richmond Highway was shutdown in both directions between Gunston Road and Hassett Street in Lorton.

The scene was still active throughout the day with HazMat crews on the scene conducting atmospheric monitoring. Just before 6 p.m., Route 1 remained closed in spots but fully opened at 8:40 p.m. At that time, the air quality readings were within normal levels.

A total of six civilians were transported to nearby medical facilities. One with life-threatening injuries and five with non-life-threatening injuries. One firefighter was also transported with non-life-threatening injuries.
